HANAPEPE — The county-owned Hanapepe Bridge was reopened Friday morning following an inspection conducted by Public Works officials.
The bridge was hit by a Matson container a week ago when it floated down the Hanapepe River as a result of flooding in the area.
“We did a visual inspection of the bridge and there is no evidence of structural damage,” said Deputy County Engineer Ed Renaud, adding that the integrity of the bridge is sound.
The extent of the damage to the county’s bridge couldn’t be fully assessed until late last week when the flow of the Hanapepe River returned to normal.
In December, the bridge was inspected by Kai Hawai‘i, an O‘ahu-based structural engineering consulting firm. They determined that the bridge was sound and the 10-ton weight limit should remain unchanged.
