It was another record-breaking day for the championship Kaua‘i High School Red Raider track team, yesterday, at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s Track and Field Championships at Vidinha Stadium.
A day after Jamilee Jimenez and Tiffany Ikeda-Simao broke the KIF records for the long and triple jumps, it was time for a male to claim a record.
With a jump of 42 feet, 8 inches, senior Aric Cansino broke the record for the Boys Triple Jump event —a record previously set a year ago by Waimea High School’s Bailon Batalion at 42 feet, 7 inches. His teammate Tyrus Ceria-Lux came close to it with a jump of 42 feet, 5 inches.
“I was pretty stoked,” he said. “I was just hoping to make states.”
It was a surprising feat for the athlete who admitted not practicing his jumps at the track that often. Cansino is the basically the sole setter for the Red Raider volleyball team and most of his time is dedicated to it.
“(The volleyball team) wants to make sure I’m at every practice, so I don’t get to practice (track) that often,” he said.
He did say, though, that volleyball practice does help him with his field events in that he’s still working on his speed and jumping. He also said he didn’t really prepare for the triple jump finals and he thinks that may have helped him.
“I guess I had fresh legs, so I was ready to go,” he said.
Cansino broke the record on his final jump. It was a scenario he’s been in before, having made last year’s state tournament in the same fashion.
“I made it to states last year, with my last jump on the last day (of competition),” he said.
Cansino also won the Boys Long Jump earlier in the afternoon with a jump 20 feet, 7 1/2 inches and took second in the Boys High Jump with a jump of 5 feet, 6 inches.
First-place honors for that event went to Kapa‘a High School’s Tyler Cram who, after a whole season, posted a state-qualifying jump at 6 feet.
Still, the top overall team honors belonged to Kaua‘i, having won the girls championship hands down with a score of 228, and the boys — whose title depended on the final finish of the final race yesterday — winning with 182.5 points. Waimea High School’s boys trailed by only six points, finishing at 176.5.
Ikeda-Simao defended her individual running titles, winning both the Girls 100 (12.55) and 200 Meter (26.3) dashes. Waimea’s Natasha Abadillo won the Girls 400 Meter Dash (1.05) and Caralyn Broyles won the Girls 1,500 Meter Run (5:24.17) and the Girls 3,000 Meter Run (12:13.11).
Waimea’s Kayla Werner took the shot put by three inches. Werner tossed 31 feet, 7 inches over Kaua‘i’s Uila Langi who three 31 feet, 4 1/2 inches. Langi, however, took the top honors in the discus with a toss of 94 feet, 8 inches.
For the boys running events, Waimea’s Jared Coleman-Stark defended his Boys 800 Meter Run (2:16.02) and Boys 1,500 Meter Run (4:50.85) titles and picked up another title in the Boys 3,000 Meter Run (10:58.89).
Siasau Matagiese decidedly won the shot put with a throw of 47 feet and took second in the discus at 121 feet, 10 inches. Kapa‘a’s Wally Nishimura won that event with a toss of 124 feet, 10 inches.
The final event, the Boys 4×400 Meter Relay proved to be the deciding factor for the championship team and Kaua‘i’s team performed. Coming in with a time of 3:40.84, Kaua‘i’s A-team, edged out Waimea’s A-team (3:42.22) to win the title.
The state track and field meet will be held on O‘ahu from May 16 and 17.
