A Kalaheo resident will soon stand trial on drug and weapons charges while a Lihu‘e man was arrested on suspicion of drug violations in recent weeks, according to Lieutenant Eric Shibuya of the Kaua‘i Police Department’s narcotics section.
Robert Melvin Morris, 32, was picked up just after 6 p.m. on April 7 at the junction of Kaumualii Highway and Kipu Road. Officer Brian Silva placed Morris under arrest on suspicion of nine different felonies.
Shibuya told The Garden Island that Morris was in possession of 2.2 grams of methamphetamine or “ice,” a loaded .22 caliber pistol with silencer and drug paraphernalia at the time of his arrest.
The charges filed against Morris in his April 11 arraignment included possession of firearm in commission of a drug offense, a Class A felony, a slew of separate drug and weapons offenses, and even identity theft.
His preliminary hearing occured on April 16, and on April 29, Morris entered a plea of not guilty. He will await the June 30 jury trial at Kaua‘i Community Correctional Center with bail set at $186,000. Pretrial motions will be heard by 5th Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe on June 4.
Ellsworth Numazawa, 23, of Lihu‘e, was arrested May 13 in Hanama‘ulu Beach Park on suspicion of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug — “ice,” according to Shibuya — and burglary.
Outstanding charges against him also include multiple counts of criminal contempt of court and a handful of drug violations. He was arraigned on nine criminal charges on May 15.
Numazawa will next be in district court for a preliminary hearing in relation to the drug chrages on June 3, and will stand trial for only the contempt of court charges on June 12. He is being held in the police department’s detention facility on $28,200 bail, said Shibuya.
