A two-car accident yesterday along a busy section of Kuhio Highway outside McDonald’s resulted in minor injuries and damage to a wall.
According to witnesses, a gold Mazda Protege traveling southbound on Kuhio Highway crossed the center lane and struck a northbound Lexus as it was turning left into the McDonald’s driveway around 8:10 a.m.
The force of the crash pushed the Lexus onto the front lawn of the restaurant.
Paramedics and police officers arrived on the scene at around 8:15 a.m.
Both drivers reported minor injuries and were taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.
A passenger in the Lexus refused treatment.
Traffic in the area moved slowly for about an hour after the accident.
Two ‘Ele‘ele men were injured in a single-car crash that trapped the passenger inside the burning vehicle Friday night in Moloa‘a .
The driver, Asther Ned, 18, was listed in guarded condition and passenger Paulie Ueno was in serious condition after being transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital following the crash.
Their current conditions are not known.
According to a preliminary report, Ned was southbound on Kuhio Highway just north of mile marker 16 in the vicinity of Moloa‘a at around 11:14 p.m.
He lost control of his Toyota pickup truck, crossed the centerline and ran off the roadway. He then ran into an embankment and hit a tree.
When police arrived at the scene, Ned was standing outside the vehicle. Ueno was trapped in the front passenger seat and the vehicle was on fire.
Police officers extinguished the fire before Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene.
Ueno was removed from the vehicle with extraction tools by firefighters and police.
Kuhio Highway was closed for about two and a half hours after the accident.
