Aaron Soong went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Trent Allianic allowed only two hits yesterday in Kaua‘i High School’s 8-0 victory over Moloka‘i High School, sending the Red Raiders to the first ever Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division II State Championship final.
“I was stoked,” Soong said about yesterday’s win. “It’s what we’ve been working so hard for.”
Allianic threw five innings before being relieved be Andrew Renaud. He threw two innings and also only allowed two hits.
Kaylen Wakumoto went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and two runs scored.
“It feels awesome (to be going to the finals),” he said. “The game was just fun. We were doing just what we were doing all season.”
For the Farmers (8-7), Scott Rapanot Jr. was strapped with the loss. Moloka‘i moves on to play Kalaheo High School (12-4) for third place.
The top-ranked Raiders (13-1) will now face No. 2 St. Anthony School (13-2) in the state championship at 4 p.m. today at the Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
This is the first year baseball has been split into Division I and II. The farthest Kaua‘i has ever gone in a baseball championship is a third-place finish in 1990. The highest any team from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation finished was when Waimea High School finished as the state runner-up in 1984 and 1970.
