The Department of Land and Natural Resources is set to begin construction work at the Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor within a week.
“DLNR will be working with the Army Corps of Engineers and Kiewit Pacific Company to give boaters advance notice of any changes to harbor access,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson, in a press release. “We thank the public for their patience during this work, which when completed, will provide a safer harbor for all users.”
When construction begins, half of the entrance channel will remain open to allow passage of vessels in and out of the harbor.
Construction work will start at the east breakwater. The breakwater will be removed in sections and rebuilt higher to offer more inner harbor protection. Starting in September the harbor may be closed during construction for one-week periods. As September approaches more information will be made available.
Work on the west breakwater is expected to begin in late October. Dredging work is planned for early November. The project should be completed by the end of April 2009.
After work is complete, the harbor will be a safer refuge from large swells.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a construction contract for $18,771,500 to Kiewit Pacific Company of Kapolei, O‘ahu, for the Kikiaola Light Draft Harbor Project in September of last year. The project is being cost-shared between the Army Corps of Engineers and DLNR.
