A $500 shopping spree is just one of the prizes that will be given away at the Operation Military Appreciation, June 28.
Sons of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i Chapter members, as well as representatives from Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson and Garden Island Motorsports, were on hand Friday night passing out drawing slips for the shopping spree.
Filled slips were deposited into one of the saddlebag pockets of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle which was joined by the Sons’ riders as well as new motorcycles from the dealerships.
“This is the second time we’re doing Operation Military Appreciation, and it gets bigger each time we do it,” said Tony Ricci, one of the key organizers for the event.
Operation Military Appreciation is a fundraising and awareness event dedicated to supporting our active military personnel and veterans, states a program flier.
More importantly, this event will provide resources to the family readiness support groups which provide assistance to spouses and children of Kaua‘i’s active service military personnel who are sent abroad.
Proceeds from the day-long event go to benefit the family readiness groups of the active branches of service on the island including Na Ohana Ki‘ai o Kaua‘i (Air National Guard Family Readiness), Kaua‘i Navy Family Readiness, C-Troop 299th CAV RSTA (Kaua‘i Army National Guard Family Readiness) and the Kaua‘i Veterans Council.
The event kicks off with a televised motorcyle parade from the Grove Farm Park in Puhi, located behind the Kaua‘i Harley-Davidson retail shops.
Registration for the parade starts at 9 a.m. with the parade leaving at 10 a.m. for Waimea and back.
A Military Honor Guard presentation will open the formal program starting at noon.
Entertainment includes a variety of music and will start at 11 a.m. and run until 9 p.m.
Daytime activities include food and vendor booths, a beer garden where IDs will be required, a Silent Auction and lucky number drawings. Inflatable waterslides will be set up for keiki during the daytime hours.
One of the featured attractions will be Motorcycle ‘Biker’ Games with events such as Slow-drag and an off-road riders skill exhibition. Additionally, a Ride-in Bike Show with trophies being awarded will be another feature.
