Israel Vibration show

The three original members of reggae greats Israel Vibration — Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Cecil “Skelly” Spence and Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig — first met as children at Kingston’s Mona Rehabilitation Center, where all three were receiving treatment for polio. A shared spirituality and faith in Rastafari forged a friendship between them, helping to overcome the
adversities of illness and poverty. Later expelled from the treatment center for their spiritual beliefs, the trio took to the streets of Kingston, where they harmonized for their suppers. By 1976, Wiss, Skelly and Apple had gained a sizable following as well as the financial backing of Rastafari religious group the Twelve Tribes of Israel, who agreed to produce their first single.

Kaua‘i Museum solo
exhibition opening with
artist Bruna Stude

Stude’s show entitled “Moana” will open in the Mezzanine Gallery beginning Thursday and running through Oct. 2.
Known for her unique and intimate approach to ocean photography, Stude’s new series of assemblages and black and white photographs explore a different vision through her mental landscape and the ocean’s physical presence. Having recently returned from a trip to Honduras, Stude worked with scientists there who were studying the migrating whale sharks. The exhibit will also feature Stude’s recently published book, “In-Sight.”

KHS presents a free showing of “The Saga of the USS Saginaw Gig,” with guest speaker Paul Nitchman. In October 1870, the USS Saginaw wrecked on the reef of Kure Atoll stranding over 90 crewmen, 1,300 miles from the Hawaiian Islands.
Five brave souls set out for rescue in a whaling gig, in a desperate attempt to reach Honolulu. Instead, their long and dangerous trek brought them to the northern shores of Kaua‘i. Paul Nitchman will tell their tale of heroism and tragedy, and share the details of his research that brought their past into the present.
Paul Nitchman is a naval historian and a volunteer with the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro, Calif., and a frequent visitor to Kaua‘i. He is the author of a biographical dictionary of U.S. Navy ship’s namesakes from 1890 to 2008, a 10-year project that involved the collection of 1,400 biographies of sailors. Seating at the conference room is limited. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served. For more information call the Kaua‘i Historical Society at 245-3373.

Participants receive herbal patches at this free summer health event. Grandmaster Hong teaches easy and healthy lung exercises. This is a fifth annual asthma and allergy humanitarian event. There are others scheduled for July 29 and Aug. 18.

Antique quilts from the Kaua‘i Museum collection as well as quilts from the community are shared in the main gallery exhibit. Learn some of the unique traditions tied to this art form as practiced on Kaua‘i. See the entire collection of W.J. Senda photographs of the 1933 Mokihana Club of Kaua‘i’s first-time quilt exhibit as shown on a slide show with two of the quilts on display in the gallery.
