NUKOLI‘I — Brycen Nakashima’s involvement in caring for his bed-ridden grandparent while effectively managing a student schedule caught the eye of the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i Scholarship Committee.
That was according to Dennis Esaki, of the CAK who presented the recipients of the 2008 CAK scholarships at the CAK general membership meeting Thursday night at the Hilton Kauai Beach Resort.
Four 2008 high school graduates and four Kaua‘i residents currently in college shared in $8,500 in scholarship awards presented by the CAK.
Nakashima, the son of Machal and Jon Nakashima of Hanapepe, was one of the four graduating seniors and plans on attending the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and intends to major in mechanical engineering. He was a recipient of the $1,000 Clyde Shigematsu Memorial Scholarship sponsored by Honsador Lumber.
Michael Julian, a 2008 Kaua‘i High School graduate, is heading for the Northern Arizona University as an engineering major. The son of Linda and Dominador Julian of Lihu‘e, he was also part of the student delegation from the Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative which traveled to Washington, D.C. ,for a week-long conference on cooperatives. He was a $1,500 recipient of the Payton Bryan-Chung Memorial Scholarship.
Kaulupono Perez, the son of Kathy and Kaleo Perez of Hanama‘ulu, was recipient of a $1,000 Payton Bryan-Chung Memorial Scholarship. The 2008 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama, will be a freshman at Colorado State majoring in engineering.
Mark Guirao, the son of Nida and Avelino Guirao of Hanapepe, is a 2008 graduate of Waimea High School who will be a freshman majoring in electrical engineering at the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. He was one of four $1,000 CAK scholarship recipients.
Lynnell Wright, a major in electrical engineering with a minor in mathematics was unable to attend the presentation due to commitments at school. Her award was accepted by her parents, U‘ilani and Erwin Wright of Kekaha.
Cedric Macadangdang, the son of Patricia Macadangdang, was also the recipient of a CAK scholarship, majoring in electrical engineering.
Peterson Dela Cruz Jr. is a civil engineering major with emphasis on Water Resources. He made the trip home to accept the award along with his parents Jean and Peterson Dela Cruz of Hanapepe.
Garon Nobriga, a senior at the University of Hawai‘i majoring in civil and environmental Engineering, also made a special trip home to accept his award along with his parents Nathan and Rona Nobriga of Puhi.
Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona, on hand to witness the signing of an innovative Memorandum of Understanding between the CAK and Diagnostic Laboratory Services aimed toward a drug-free workplace, congratulated the scholarship recipients.
In his keynote address to the audience, Aiona spoke of the importance of education and successes of the students, alluding to the recent successful FIRST Robotics competition on O‘ahu.
