Po‘ipu’s Kyle Ramey has made it through a round at the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing trials yesterday. Other Kaua‘i’s prospects weren’t as lucky.
Ramey got through the Round of 64 yesterday by finishing in second place (8.43), behind Chase Newsome (10.00). Ramey went on to narrowly win his heat (12.00) in the Round of 32 over Jody Davis (11.90).
Ramey now moves on to events deciding who will receive the final eight spots for the main U.S. Open event.
Ramey, though, is out of the U.S. Open Pro Junior competition. He fell behind to finish in fourth in the Round of 64.
Hanalei’s Tyler Newton is also out of both the Pro Junior and Open trials. Surfing the increased swell, which reached heights of 2 to 3 feet, Newton came up just short, finishing with 7.13 in the Round of 64. Newton finished fourth behind Cory Arrambide (15.17), fellow Hawai‘i surfer Mason Ho (13.90) and Fisher Heverly (11.00), for the Pro Junior.
Newton failed to get past fellow Hawai‘i surfers Granger Larson (16.10) and Macy Mullen (13.83) in the third round of the Open trials.
Hanalei’s Alana Blanchard, surfing in the S3 Supergirl Pro Junior, finished fourth and is out of the competition. O‘ahu’s Coco Ho, however, was a standout yesterday, winning her heat. She is the only Hawai‘i female surfer left in the competition.
The other surfers left in the Open trials and competition are Ho, O‘ahu’s Kiron Jabour, John John Florence and Ned Snow.
The period for the Open will hold through till Sunday.
