Kaua‘i High School PAIRS-PTSA held its 17th Project Graduation just a few weeks ago, but is already looking ahead to its 18th annual event.
Darnell Aquino, the event chair from Kaua‘i High School, accepted a grant from the Young Brothers Community Advisory Board which is just one of several ways the Project Graduation Committee raises funds to enable the event to continue.
“The PAIRS-PTSA Project Graduation Committee thanks the YB CAB for its generosity,” Aquino said.
“Without the support of community partners like Young Brothers, this event could not take place.”
Project Graduation is an annual event planned by more than 75 parent volunteers working together as a team under Aquino.
Aquino said the event is designed to be a safe environment for graduating high school seniors to celebrate a milestone in their lives. She noted that this might be the last time they will be able to celebrate together and as such, Project Graduation creates lasting memories.
The all-night event is a secure, drug-free, non-smoking venue where many activities such as disc jockey music, massage, make-up sessions, hairstyling and video games are presented for the graduates to enjoy, Aquino said.
Kaua‘i High School graduates are asked to pay a fee, but this amounts to just a small part of the total expense of the event, the chair explained.
The committee campaigns annually to raise supplemental funds to be able to provide a wide variety of activities, food and beverages, entertainment and souvenirs for the graduates.
Kaua‘i High School’s Project Graduation effectively attracts 90 percent of its graduation population to participate.
