KAPA‘A — Max Look had two home runs and Brandon Roberts had one to lead Kaimuki to an 8-5 edge over Central Maui, yesterday at the state Little League Majors tournament.
Kaimuki opened the scorebooks early and kept Maui on the catch-up wagon for most of the game in the battle of the undefeated, Sunday.
But Maui battled valiantly and in the fourth inning, tied the score at 3-3 on a 2-run homer from Isaiah Maddela only to have Kaimuki answer the tie by capitalizing on the Maui mound and errors to drive in three runs on just a hit. That hit was a solo homerun by Look to break the 3-3 stalemate.
Two more runs, Reid Kimura, getting first on a walk, and Tosh Taniguchi, getting first on an error, crossed on RBI walks to Ethan Rosehill and Quinn Cassidy, respectively.
Maui did not give in, and in the sixth inning, pushed two runs, Doulton Cabacungan, singling, and Maddela, doubling, on a 2-RBI single by Evin Kailiehu with no outs.
But Kailiehu was cut down at second on a fielder’s choice off Noah Apolo and Micah Richardson hit into a double play to end Maui’s comeback hopes.
The loss gives Maui its first loss of the tournament and will pit them against the winner of the Waipio/West O‘ahu matchup which will take to the field this afternoon starting at 4 p.m.
Kaimuki, who wrapped up the win behind eight hits, remains the only undefeated team in the tournament, wrapping up this third win behind Kimura’s pitching which allowed five runs on six hits while striking out three Maui batters. He hit two batters and walked just one.
Look topped the Kaimuki hitters on a 3-4 showing with a double and two homeruns. Taniguchi (2-4) had two doubles and scored once.
Kailiehu, who started the outing at firstbase and moved to third, paced the Maui hitting with a 3-3 showing including a homerun and two singles. Maddela followed with a 2-3 showing in the box on a homerun and a double.
Waipio 5, Kailua 0
Pikai Winchester came up with a 3-run homer in the first frame to lead Waipio to a 5-0 win over Kailua in the Sunday opener.
With the win, Waipio meets West O‘ahu, an 11-3 winner over Hilo, Saturday, in a single game this afternoon starting at 4 p.m. at the New Kapa‘a Ball Park.
The Winchester homer pushed C-Boy Donahue, walking to first, and Khade Paris, singling, across the plate with just one out.
Waipio added two more runs in the fifth inning when Paris, singling, and Iolana Akau, hit by a pitch, scored for Waipio.
Overall, Waipio tallied just four hits led by Winchester, 2-3, with his homerun and a double. Paris, 2-3, with two singles followed.
Paris, who scored twice in the win, picked up the victory on the mound by going the distance and throwing a no-hitter against Kailua.
There is no charge for fans to come and enjoy the games being hosted by the Kawaihau Community Little League Association.
