Daniel Carter appeared to be in control, grabbing the first wave of the 12 Under Menehune class, Saturday.
That wave gave the youngster a long ride, cheers from the crowd and was capped by a nice cover on a strong reform at the 10th Annual Ho‘onua o ke Kai presented by Quiksilver.
But somewhere mid-heat, Tabin Shamblin came out and worked a PK reform to an even stronger showing to give him top honors in the 12 Under class, relegating Carter to a third place showing below James Thesken.
Despite the lure of strong surf meets off-island which attracted riders from around the state, the Ho‘onua o ke Kai fielded a strong showing at both the body board and body surfing events at Shipwrecks Beach and the junior and senior surfers working the solid PK breaks through two days of competition.
Brianna Cope lost little time asserting herself in the 17 Under Girls division. The blue-shirted competitor grabbed wave after wave and milked the PK reform for everything that was available.
That gave spectators a thrill as she was swallowed by the white water on several rides.
Savannah Sussman, on the other hand, preferred the outside break and following her showings which kicked out at the start of the reforms, finished in second place.
