The Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club staff raised more than $1,300 for the second annual Patriot Golf Day — the most of any single golf club in the Aloha PGA Section.
The staff announced yesterday, that over the Labor Day weekend, they and their patrons were able to use creative ways to generate funds benefitting the Folds of Honor Foundation — a charity dedicated to helping spouses and children of military members who were either seriously disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.
Golf clubs asked patrons to donate $1 of their greens fees to go to the fund. But due to economic contraints facing many people today, Kaua‘i Lagoons golf pro Scott Ashworth said the clubs were asked to find different ways to approach this year’s fundraiser.
Ashworth and the staff found not one, but two ways to approach it.
“First we had our Marriott associate’s golf tournament and $10 from each of their tournament fees went to the fund. From that, we raised just over $600,” Ashworth said. “Then we also had one of the custom TaylorMade made specifically for Patriot Golf day and we had a raffle for it that was $10 per ticket. That generated more than $700.”
Kaua‘i Lagoons’ total was roughly 13 percent of the Aloha Section’s estimated total of $10,000.
Twenty two of Hawai‘i’s golf courses participated.
The Kiahuna Golf Club raised $920 and Poi‘pu Bay raised $734.
Patriot Golf Day was first established last year by Maj. Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot and PGA professional.
Most courses will still collect donations until the end of this month.
