Kaua‘i 3, Kapa‘a 1 – KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a High School girls volleyball team fought as hard as they could to hold off Kaua‘i High School in the third set to save from going home early and won it in extra points, 29-27. But it was Kaua‘i who came out with the win in four, 25-11, 25-21, 27-29 and 25-12.
Kaua‘i struck early, utilizing the duo of setter Waileia Kanealii and outside hitter Jori Jasper to build a 9-2 lead. A scrambling Kapa‘a team shifted its players around to move Mailika Napoleon from the outside to set which resulted in a brief scoring run.
A slight tap over for a point, a kill and ace from Tori Tuttle, and an outside set from Napoleon to Leiui Kaholokula and the Lady Warriors crept up to 15-10. It ended with a blocking duel in the front when Kapa‘a’s Jondi Das blocked a Jasper tip, but the Raider defense was there to send the ball back to the other side and finish the set.
Kapa‘a (2-1) got solid serving from Jessilyn Artoho-Aki in the second who got the Lady Warriors within two of the Raiders at 11-9. As soon as Kaua‘i regained possesion, there was some confusion on the court with Kapa‘a being called for out of position at the time of the serve. That call was then overturned, but there was more confusion amongst the officials and Kaua‘i’s Shyanne Sadora had to rehit her serve four times before everything was set. Kaua‘i won with an ace from Janessa Grady.
Kapa‘a got its first lead of the night in the third, but didn’t hold it for long. Jasper found the back corner for a kill to tie the game and then posted four points by kills in a row for the Raiders.
Kaua‘i (3-0) got all the way to match point with a tip from Kanealii. Kapa‘a forced Kaua‘i into extra points with an ace from Mele Yama and a kill from Yama to Kaholokula in the next sequence. Kapa‘a held them off to play for a fourth.
The Lady Warriors gave the Raiders all they had, but Kaua‘i got up to another big lead and got much help from Kanealii who served four straight aces.
She finished the night with 30 assists. Jasper led the Raider offense with 19 kills.
That was followed by Malia Kagawa who had 10. Both Tianni Esaki and Carly Matsumoto finished with seven digs.
Kapa‘a was mostly strong when it came to blocking. Das had 10 blocks and Kyah Schneider had five.
Waimea 3, Island School 0
The defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions of Waimea High School got their first win last night in three sets over Island School, 25-14, 25-13 and 25-11.
The Menehune (1-2) have a young team and no one has really emerged as the leading hitter just yet.
This is the first year of varsity play for the Voyagers (0-3) and so far have been able to keep up with the rest of the league. They seem to still be committing little errors, but they are making good progress.
