WAIMEA — Weather, while heavy with humidity and the threat of rain from dark clouds, may have helped the winners of Saturday’s Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country race in Waimea.
Waimea, host for the first KIF meet, eked out the boys win with 29 points over Kaua‘i (32 points), Kapa‘a (76 points) and Island School (106 points).
Kapa‘a got a boost from Sarah Farola (22:39.60-3rd) to edge out the Waimea girls with 31 points followed by the Menehune wahine at 35 points. Kaua‘i, with just three returning runners, finished with 58 points.
“I’m glad we didn’t get that rain that pounded the Eastside, but thanks to the clouds and cool weather, we had a really great day for a cross country race,” said Waimea coach and scorekeeper Basil Scott in his e-mail with the results. “Normally, it would be a lot hotter (at 4 p.m.), but because of the cooler weather, we had big improvements in a lot of the times.”
The Joyce brothers, Peter and John, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, coupled with the finishes of Joshua Quinlan and Kalen Kali-Abihai helped the Waimea boys to the top, Kali-Abihai edging out Kaua‘i runner Jacobb Saniatan by 3 seconds at the line.
With Kali-Abihai, finishing 14th overall, rounding out the Menehune boys’ scoring, the next Kaua‘i finisher, Aaron Dosono, did not cross until 20th overall in a tie with Jake Rose of Kapa‘a.
Waimea’s Christian Tangalin set the pace for the boys’ field with one of the leader positions early in the race and finishing with an 18:33.00 followed by Brycen Phillips of Kula and Chris Barich of Kaua‘i at 18:34.20 and 18:35.40, respectively.
This was a big improvement for Barich who posted a 13th overall finish at last week’s meet on a 20:20.20 run.
“The boys’ race was very competitive with the top three runners finishing within three seconds of each other,” Scott said. “It came down to a sprint at the end with Waimea’s Christian Tangalin getting a margin of about five yards for the win.”
Scott said the second and third place runners were within one stride of each other until the final few yards, despite the recorded times.
Within the field of the top 20 runners, spectators, who were afforded great vantage points of the race from above the guardrails, saw no less than four sprint finishes between the eighth through 17th places.
That tight race was capped by an actual tie in times for the 20th place between Kapa‘a’s Jake Rose and Kaua‘i’s Aaron Dosono. Both runners recorded times of 20:47.90, but Scott said the win was awarded to Rose because the photo finish system used by the KIF uses time down to the 1,000th of a second to call the close races.
Kapa‘a coach Kara Kitamura said the Warriors were without the service of three of its key runners due to injury, but these three should be ready in time for the meet Saturday at Kula School.
Scott said the addition of Kula runner Tiare Welborn who finished sixth at 23:16.50 made a big difference in an otherwise competitive girls race.
Caralyn Broyles and Natasha Abadilla of Waimea set the pace in that field, finishing one-two, respectively, with times of 20:41.70 and 22:01.80. Both runners posted improvements in their times from last week’s meet dedicated to Basilio Fuertes.
Saturday’s meet moves to Kula School with the first race starting at 9 a.m.
