A new program at Kaua‘i Community College offers tips on how to start a home garden and a chance to vet those skills in a community garden.
“Successful Gardening” began yesterday Sept. 6, and is offered by the Office of Continuing Education and Training as a part of the Food Industry Career Pathways Program, sponsored in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The program includes practical, hands-on experience in the campus garden under the supervision of experienced organic gardeners, as well as seminars with consultants and farmers, including staff from the University of Hawai‘i’s College of Tropical Agriculture.
A minimum four hours per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays is required for the hands-on portion. The cost per month is $45. Participants receive a share of fresh vegetables each week.
Seminars will be held 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 16, 18, 23 and 25. A $45 fee covers the cost of all four sessions. Topics include best practices for planning and organizing a vegetable, fruit and herb garden. The seminars are designed to connect participants with Hawai‘i professionals.
The focus of the series is providing essential skills to create a wholesome and sustainable supply of food for the island community, according to instructor Glenn Hontz.
