Kaua‘i Museum
‘Ohana Day
Tomorrow, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A free day to visit the Kaua‘i Museum happens on the first Saturday of the month. Hanapepe architect and author Juan Wilson talks about Kaua‘i’s future.
Juan Wilson’s Kaua‘i experiences began in the early 1970s when he spent a year exploring the island before returning to the Mainland to get his degree. While interning with the New York firm of Davis & Brody Associates, he spent a year doing urban design in Teheran, Iran. Licensed in 1977, his environment work in the next decade included projects such as a barrier dune restoration project, landfill reclamation project and saltwater marsh conservation project in Fairfield, Conn., in the 1980s.
After working and living on the East Coast for almost 30 years, Wilson returned to Hawai‘i in 2000. Much had changed, and much was threatened, but many of the important elements that were the Kaua‘i of the 1970s still remained. Inspired by the early work of the Hawaii Legislature’s 2050 Task Force in 2006, Wilson wrote a future history of Kaua‘i spanning 2007-2050. As a continuation of that effort he wrote a bi-weekly column in The Garden Island newspaper from 2007 to 2008. Wilson is an advocate of slow growth and self reliant, sustainable communities in balance with nature.

‘Art Kaua‘i’ slide lecture
5:30 p.m., Monday
In conjunction with the above mentioned exhibition, there will be a free slide lecture at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Kukui Grove with the show jurors. They will present “Excelling the Work of Heaven: Personal Adornment from China” featuring images from the award-winning exhibition co-curated by Yoshihara and held at the University of Hawai‘i Art Gallery in Fall 2007 that featured 700 exquisite objects of personal adornment made of silver, jade, kingfisher feathers, ivory, precious stones and coral predominantly created during late imperial China (1368n1911).
It was a golden age where artisans transformed materials beyond function to levels of perfection through their virtuoso techniques. The adornments provide insight into the social structure of the time — culture, myths, folklore, literature and religion — much of which is still practiced today.
