Kiyoichi “Kiyo” Matsushima
Kiyoichi “Kiyo” Matsushima, of Kilauea, died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Sept. 2, 2008, at the age of 96. Born May 26, 1912, in Hanama‘ulu, he retired as fireroom crew chief with Kilauea Sugar Plantation Co.
He is survived by wife Kikuyo; sons Royden and Davis Matsushima, of Kilauea; daughter Lorna (Gerald) Kuniyuki of Kahalu‘u, O‘ahu; brother Kenneth Matsushima; one grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Private services were held.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Matsushima family with the arrangements.
Olivia Souza Kanae
Olivia Souza Kanae, 93, of Honolulu, died Sept. 11, 2008. She was born in Kealia, Kaua‘i.
Kanae was preceded in death by husband Peter “Sonny/Biggie” Kanae.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at Diamond Head Memorial Park on Thursday, Sept, 18, at 10:30 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by Diamond Head Mortuary. The family discourages monetary gifts. Aloha attire is suggested.
Shirley Mary Barino
Shirley Mary Barino died Sept. 9, 2008, at the age of 65 at Maui Memorial Hospital. Born March 6, 1943, she worked at Wal-Mart on Kaua‘i for many years.
She was preceded in death by parents Prospero and Sally Lumabao and brother Eddie Lumabao.
Barino is survived by husband Anjil Barino Jr. of Maui, daughters Loma (Frank) Lopes, Sandie (Edmund) Sumalpong and Joclyne (Lou) Espanto, all of Honolulu; sons Myron (Marlene) Barino and Almerick Barino Sr., both of Kaua‘i; sister Mildred Vaughn of Indiana; brothers Muricio Actuca of Florida, George (Lynette) Lumabao of Makaweli; sister-in-law Violet Lumabao of Hanama‘ulu; hanai niece Desiree (Kawila) Palama of Kaua‘i; daughter-in-law Dela Barino of Maui; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Kalaheo. Services to follow.
