A reported domestic dispute in the parking lot fronting 7-Eleven in Lihu‘e yesterday afternoon ended with a suspected participant in the disturbance fleeing on foot from police.
Around 1:30 p.m., witnesses said a young man and young woman were arguing when the man reportedly tackled the woman to the ground, picked her up and slammed her on the hood of a truck. He then began to choke the woman, witnesses said.
After calls to 911 were placed, two witnesses, both men, approached the couple to intervene.
The man then released the woman, and within minutes the police arrived.
After allegedly making a rude finger gesture at police, the man ran and a foot chase ensued. The man was caught near the Rent-A-Center on Kuhio Highway, a half-block away, and arrested.
Micah Moke, 19, of Koloa was arrested on multiple offenses including terroristic threatening, kidnapping, harassment and resisting arrest, said Kauai County spokesperson Mary Daubert. Moke was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for clearance before booking at the Lihu‘e cellblock.
The woman left the scene before the police arrived.
Lihu‘e resident Charlie Cobb-Adams, one of the two intervenors, said he tried to reason with the young man and calm him down.
“Everybody showed that measure of care,” Cobb-Adams said of the bystanders’ actions.
