Seabury Hall ends Kaua‘i season

HONOLULU — The Lady Spartans of Seabury Hall defeated the Red Raiders of Kaua‘i High School in straight sets yesterday, 25-23 and 25-19, in the New City Nissan/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II State Volleyball Championships at Farrington High School.

The Spartans (10-5) and Raiders (11-4), after losing their opening round matches in the championship bracket, were playing in the consolation bracket yesterday. With the win, the Spartans from the Maui Interscholastic League continue through the consolation round, ending Kaua‘i’s season.

The Raiders were enjoying a successful run in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation, having gone undefeated in the first round and winning the KIF championship match in dramatic fashion over the two-time KIF champs from Waimea High School.

This was the Raiders first state championship berth since the HHSAA split the league into Divisions I and II.

The Raiders will return to Kaua‘i soon while the Spartans move on to play the Lady Dragons of Honoka‘a High School (15-5). Honoka‘a defeated fellow Big Island Interscholastic Federation school Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy in three sets, 25-15, 15-25 and 16-14.

Hawai‘i Prep, like Kaua‘i, was also eliminated from the consolation round yesterday.

Still in action in the championship round is Kailua High School which took down No. 4 Hilo yesterday in four sets, 25-13, 25-23, 23-25 and 25-23.

Kailua (16-3) of the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association advances to the semifinal to play the winner of the No. 1 Hawai‘i Baptist Academy/Castle High School game.

No. 2 Moloka‘i High School’s Farmers defeated the Junior ‘Bows from University Lab School in five sets, 16-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10. The Farmers (12-2) were led by Danna-Lynn Hooper-Juario who finished with 12 kills and 13 digs. They move on to play the winner of yesterday’s No. 3 Kapolei High School/Word of Life night game.
