The six-time Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions of Kaua‘i High School received the No. 3 ranking for the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II Football State Championships, it was announced Monday.
The Red Raiders (7-0 overall, 5-0 KIF), who were also awarded the third ranking at last year’s tournament, are scheduled to play the second representative from the O‘ahu Interscholastic Association. That and the other O‘ahu team in the tournament has yet to be determined as the league is still undergoing its playoffs.
This year’s state bid for the Raiders will start at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 at Vidinha Stadium.
The winner of that game will advance to the quarterfinal round to play the second-ranked champions from the Maui Interscholastic League at the War Memorial Stadium on Maui.
Two years ago, the undefeated Red Raiders were ranked No. 1 heading into the tournament to and played King Kekaulike of Maui in the first Division II state championship title game. King Kekaulike have since been moved up to play in Division I.
The Na Ali‘i were also the only Neighbor Island team to ever win a football championship.
The Raiders finish off their regular season on Friday when they travel to Kapa‘a to play the Warriors for their homecoming. The Raiders are coached by second-year head coach Derek Borrero.
