HONOLULU — The University of Hawai‘i women’s basketball team opened the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic with a 71-48 loss to San Diego State yesterday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
In the 29th annual tournament, the Rainbow Wahine were the third and final game of the day.
The first two games featured three teams ranked in the top 25.
Hawai‘i opened the game tough, battling San Diego State to an 18-18 tie, before the Aztecs took a 38-23 halftime lead. In the second half, Hawai‘i cut the lead to 13 with just over five minutes remaining in the game, but couldn’t get any closer.
Overall the Rainbow Wahine were led by Megan Tinnin, who had 12 points and eight rebounds, which tied a career-high.
Dita Liepkalne had 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists and Allie Patterson had a career-high nine points in just her second game in a Hawai‘i uniform.
The Aztecs were led by Paris Johnson, who scored a game-high and had the day’s high game with 31 points.
Offensively the Rainbow Wahine shot 39 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range.
The Aztecs shot 49 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range.
Hawai‘i committed 27 turnovers, while San Diego State had 13.
Hawai‘i returns to action at 1:10 p.m. today when it faces No. 19 Purdue.
The first game of the day features San Diego State and Prairie View at 11 a.m. and Stanford and Iowa State wrap up the day at 3:20 p.m.
