Derek Wallace of UNC Wilmington shot an 8-under 64 for a three-round final 15-under 201 to beat San Diego’s Jake Yount by a stroke and win the individual title in the University of Hawai‘i’s inaugural Kaua‘i Collegiate Invitational at the Puakea Golf Course yesterday. The team from San Diego, led by Yount and Honolulu’s Alex Ching, took the team title.
Yount, who went into the final day in the lead after setting a Puakea course record 63, shot a 5-under 67 yesterday to finish at 202.
Blake Brown (203) of Boise State shot three consecutive rounds under 70 to finished in third. Punahou grad Ching, who was last year’s Hawai‘i high school state golf champion at Wailua, tied for fourth with Chance Cota of Utah. Ching shot 67 yesterday and Cota, 69, but both finished at 11-under 205.
Rounding out the top were San Francisco’s Domingo Jojola (206), San Diego’s Blake Trimble (207), San Jose State’s Jay Myers (208) and Drake’s Ben Freeman (209). Five finished at 210 for at 10th: Louisana Tech’s Matthew Harvey, James Madison’s Fielding Brewbaker, Boise State’s Scott Loewen, San Jose State’s Mark Hubbard and Drake’s Cody Schweinefus.
Kaua‘i’s own T.J. Kua was host school Hawai‘i’s highest-place finisher, tying for 15 with a three-round total 212 with UC Riverside’s Scott Clayton, Utah’s Kaleb Mahanes and Gonzaga’s Bowdy Ehler.
San Diego (825) beat out UNC Wilmington (840) for the team title by 15 strokes. San Jose (843) finished third.
Hawai‘i’s Warriors (870) finished 12th out of the 14-team tournament, which also featured a team from Japan. This was the Warrior’s third tournament of the season. Up next is the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate on O‘ahu.
