Last week members of the Filipino community gathered in front of the Historic County Building by the statue of Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal to commemorate his works and significance.
Dr. Jose Rizal is celebrated as a genius, multi-linguist, artist, scientist, historian, novelist and theologian.
He is considered the greatest apostle of Filipino nationalism who worked in securing political and social reforms for his country while at the same time educating his countrymen.
Because of his fearless exposures of the injustices committed by the civil and clerical officials, he provoked the authorities and was imprisoned.
Revolution followed not long after and Rizal was found guilty of treason in a mock trial and executed on Dec. 30, 1896.
Dr. Jose Rissole’s last poem, “My Last Farewell,” written before his execution, was read by Abigail Iloreta in English and Juno Apalla in Spanish.
The gathering was welcomed by KFCC President Abe Iloreta, the US and Philippine anthem led by Virgie Cruzada and Rhoda Libre, the invocation given Liza Trinidad and the Mayor’s message was read by his representative Councilman Derek Kawakami.
A floral offering culminated the program with welcome participation by Miss Kaua‘i Filipina 2008, Christine Yotsuda, joined by various Filipino organizations.
