Just eight points separated the Kapa‘a Warriors from third place at the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Div. II state championships, Friday morning.
Facing the Kaimuki Bulldogs, the Warrior wahine were slow getting into the game, being outperformed by the Bulldogs 11-5 and 17-12 in the first two periods.
But Kapa‘a came back strong in the second half, outscoring Kaimuki 17-13 and was just a digit shy of the Bulldogs in the final period.
Jondi Das led the Kapa‘a effort finishing 7-18 in field goals, nailing two three-point bombs and going 4-11 on the free throw line. She also led the team in rebounds with eight, four defensive and four offensive, ending with a game-high 18 points.
Senior Mai’lika Napoleon finished with a 1-5 showing in field goals, 0-2 in three-point attempts and grabbed four rebounds for two points.
Guard Kira Nakamura added 10 points with 1 rebound and two steals. Mahea Hanie-Grace, the JV upgrade earlier in the season, finished with six points with a rebound.
Overall, Kapa‘a finished with a 31.7 percent field goal average compared with Kaimuki’s 37.7 percent. The Warriors finished with a 22.2 percent average on three-point shots and 33.3 percent at the free throw line compared with the Bulldogs’ 28.6 percent and 70.8 percent.
Olivia Phommachanh had a dozen points, Lani Makaele finished with 11 and Dejah Fa‘asoa had 10 points to lead Kaimuki.
