WAIMEA — Host Waimea High School picked up a win along with Kaua‘i High School and St. Louis High School at the opening day of Waimea’s Six-Team Baseball Tournament.
The Menehune opened with a 7-0 win over the Lahainaluna Lunas at Hanapepe Stadium. Over at the Waimea High School athletic field, St. Louis Crusaders got a 19-2 victory over the Honoka‘a Dragons of the Big Island.
Kaua‘i High School, originally scheduled for a noon opener at Hanapepe Stadium, went on to take a 14-2 win over Kapa‘a High School at Vidinha Stadium in a contest that started at 3:30 p.m.
According to Waimea athletic director Jon Kobayashi, the two Kaua‘i schools renegotiated a starting time and place after agreeing that students needed to be in class.
With the results from Thursday’s games, the noon showdown between Kaua‘i and St. Louis appears to have promise of an exciting match at Hanapepe Stadium as both teams posted opening day wins.
The winner of that game will be the sole undefeated team in the tourney.
Kapa‘a will meet Lahainaluna starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Waimea High School field and host Waimea will take on Honoka‘a starting at 2:30 p.m. at Hanapepe Stadium.
The championship game for the tournament will be based on best record over Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning with a win counting as 2 points, a tie getting a point and a loss getting no points. The second alternative for determining the teams in the finals will be by runs scored against in three games, with the final option being a coin toss.
The final game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
