Ho‘omana Video Productions movie documentary “Full Choke” claims local subject matter, two Kaua‘i filmmakers and music written, performed and produced by a Kaua‘i songwriter. The mixed martial arts match filmed for “Full Choke” in March 2008 was the seventh of its kind produced by Ainofea Productions, LLC, which hosts an annual cage match event every spring. The film provides an overview of the 20 by 20 foot platform-ring construction in Hanapepe and footage of each fight dubbed with the voice of the fighter explaining the match blow for blow. “Full Choke” is 52-minutes. Ticket costs: Adults, $7; 12 and under, $5; 5 and under, free.

Kaua‘i’s “The Power of Music” concert series presents Latif Bolat and the Healing Sounds of the Wandering Dervishes from Turkey. Tickets will be available at the door for $15. Traveling from the Turkish city of Mersin on the northeastern shores of the Mediterranean, Sufi musician, singer and composer, Bolat, will present music, poetry, Sufi mystic stories and images of the wandering dervishes from the ancient land of Turkey. The ecstatic devotional Sufi songs and folk ballads played are the music and poetry of the Anatolian mystics, kept alive since the 1200s by a dedicated cult of devotees. Throughout the program, Bolat will share devotional poetry from 13th Century Sufi poets Yunus Emre and Jalal-ud-Din Rumi and show images of Turkish people and sacred places from Anatolia. Kaua‘i Community College library is having its 13th annual used book sale. The event is being held in conjunction with the American Culinary Federation’s annual brunch fundraiser at the college.
There will be an assortment of books to choose from ranging from textbooks to children’s book and everything in between. There will be a variety of magazines, videos, DVDs and CDs available. E Kanikapila Kakou is an informal backyard Hawaiian music jam session promoting aloha through song among Kaua‘i residents by showcasing Hawai‘i’s diverse and talented composers, musicians and kumu hula sharing songs and chants. This week Na Hoku Hanohano male entertainer of the year, Nathan Aweau, will be joined by composer/ musician Walt Keale. This Garden Island Arts Council sponsored event happens every Monday through April.

Two eight-week courses
Wailua Uka
For the first time in two years, Kumu Hula Kehaulani Kekua is offering the training on oli. Two eight-week courses will be held from Tuesday to April 7 in Wailua Uka.
Papa Oli I is open to all interested students. No experience required for this introductory course in oli. It is a prerequisite to any subsequent courses of higher levels of chant training.
Papa Oli II is available to students who have successfully completed the introductory course. This course will provide an expanded repertoire of chants; including selected mele from mo‘olelo (traditional stories) and Kaua‘i place name chants.
Kumu Kehaulani is also hosting an open enrollment period through February for new and returning students to Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai. Established in 1945 on Kaua‘i by Kumu Hula, Helen Kaipuwai Kekua Waiau, the halau offers formal instruction in hula kahiko, hula ‘auana, oli, ha‘i mo‘olelo and na hana no‘eau. Study of traditional Hawaiian protocol and cultural perspectives are incorporated into every student’s hula learning experiences. Space is limited for both chant courses. Kaua‘i Society of Artists is accepting entries from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 21 at Kukui Grove. All KSA artists, including new and renewing members, will be eligible to enter one piece in any media with no size limit. This is not a juried show. All work that meets entry criteria will be displayed. For full entry criteria visit kauaisocietyofartists.org
The Members Show exhibit opens on Feb. 28 and runs through March 27. Although there will be no judge or juror for this show, KSA plans to hold a People’s Choice Award. Participating artists and gallery visitors will cast votes for their favorite artworks, with cash and other awards to be presented at a closing reception at the end of the show.
