Jonathan Viernes scored 22 points, Sheyton Waters added 14 points and 17 rebounds and the Pahoa Daggers beat the Kapa‘a Warriors 52-46 in overtime to play one more game in the consolation round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s Division II State Boys Basketball Championships at Farrington High School.
Viernes made good on a jumper to tie the game at 44-44 with three minutes left to play. Kapa‘a was able to get off four shots following Viernes’ play but was unable to capitalize on any of them, forcing the game to be determined by overtime.
Pahoa (11-5) held Kapa‘a (7-5) to only two points in overtime to seal the victory and to move on to the fifth place game against Roosevelt. The Rough Riders, of the Kalani High School bracket, beat Hawai‘i Baptist Academy 52-43.
Kapa‘a was playing without their leading scorer Kekoa Prem who got injured in Thursday’s game against No. 1 Castle.
“He’s our leading scorer and our leader (on the court), so when he’s not in, we miss him,” said Kapa‘a head coach Phillip Baclayon.
Baclayon said that in rearranging their strategy, everyone had to step it up.
Thomas Gausepohl finished with a personal tournament high 12 points and eight rebounds.
Kekoa Colipano also added 12 points and six rebounds.
Duke Pauli scored nine points and picked up seven rebounds. Sean Shigematsu finished with six points and eight rebounds.
“They tried their best,” he said. “I’m really proud of them. I feel like winning the KIF was the first step, and they won their first game (at states). Every game they played 100 percent and we (coaches) are all very proud of them. We look forward to another year.”
Castle beat Moloka‘i 57-44 on Friday night and now advance to the state championship final against Kailua Saturday at the Neal Blaisdell Arena. Unranked Kailua beat No. 2 Kohala 66-57 in overtime in the final night game on Friday.
Moloka‘i and Kailua will play in the third-place game on Saturday.
