LIHU‘E — Contestants for the 2009 Miss Kaua‘i Filipina scholarship pageant made their debut under nippy, showery conditions Saturday at the Kukui Grove Shopping Center.
Sponsored by Deja Vu and Macy’s, two tenants from the Kukui Grove Shopping Center, the three contestants: Dawn Vess, Maisie Chua and Tashana Valmoja, showed off a variety of casual and businesswear in their first public appearance.
Between changes, members of the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council, sponsors of the scholarship pageant, had its members offer up a variety of Filipino dance.
Joy Buccat, the contestant trainer, said the girls have tickets for the pageant which will be at 7 p.m., March 28, at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.
Tickets are $20 each for adults and can be obtained by contacting the contestants, or by calling Liza Trinidad, pageant chair, at 482-0267.
In previous years, the pageant has either sold out, or sold well so fans and supporters need to get tickets early.
Buccat, a former Miss Kaua‘i Filipina contestant, said the pageant is a great opportunity for Filipino women to come out for scholarships.
In addition to the scholarships, the 2009 Miss Kaua‘i Filipina earns the right to represent Kaua‘i at the 2009 Miss Hawai‘i Filipina pageant later this year.
