Organizers of the 29th Annual Ha‘ena to Hanalei Run/Walk, set for Saturday, June 6, are encouraging those interested in participating in either the eight-mile route or a shorter, five-kilometer route, to begin training for the event, they said in a press release.
The event is sponsored by the Hanalei Canoe Club, and is open to those in all age and skill groups. A pancake breakfast follows the event.
The run and walk are the club’s first fund-raiser of the paddling season, and proceeds help support all phases of the padding program, especially those for the youth.
The Ha‘ena to Hanalei Run/Walk attracts athletes not only from Kauai, but also from the other islands, the Mainland and beyond. This year, more than 550 participants of all ages are expected.
The eight-mile course begins at Ke‘e Beach at the end of Kuhio Highway at Ha‘ena State Park, and finishes at the historic Hanalei Pier on Hanalei Bay. A shorter course, five kilometers, and a one-mile youth run, start and end at the pier.
A free shuttle takes participants to the start of the eight-mile event. Awards include overall male and female runners and walkers for the eight-mile race, overall male and female runners for the five-kilometer race, and first through third overall for each age group.
For the eight-mile race, start times are 7 a.m. for runners, 6 a.m. for walkers. The free shuttle leaves the Hanalei Pier beginning at 4:45 a.m. The last shuttle leaves the pier at 6:20 a.m. The five-kilometer run and the youth run begin at 7 a.m. at the pier. The five-kilometer course can be walked, but there are no separate awards for walkers.
Race fees are $35 per person for the eight-mile and five-kilometer distances if pre-registration is accomplished, or $40 the day of the events, and $10 for the one-mile youth run.
Registered runners and walkers receive a free race T-shirt while supplies last, and all registered participants eat for free. The pancake breakfast is $7 per person for non-racers. The pancake breakfast and post-race festivities are held at Hanalei Canoe Club, a short walk from the race finish.
