WAIPOULI — A security guard discovered two suspicious containers at around 10 p.m. Thursday night at Coconut Marketplace while doing a routine check of the shopping center, according to a county press release.
The security guard found the containers on the sidewalk and notified authorities. Police officers and the Kaua‘i Fire Department Hazmat team responded. The area was barricaded and two officers were posted at the scene overnight.
The Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit from Schofield Barracks was also contacted. Upon arrival at the scene at around 10 a.m. Friday, the EOD unit examined the containers and took the necessary steps to ensure that the containers were safe for the Hazmat team to handle.
The Hazmat team then moved the containers to the parking lot at the shopping center and evaluated their contents.
After determining that it would be safe to transport the containers, the Hazmat team turned the containers over to police, who brought the containers to police headquarters in Lihu‘e for further testing.
Further information regarding the content of the containers was not available by press time.
