The story of Lawa‘i’s Hawaiian Fruit Specialties, home of the enduring Kukui brand of jams and jellies, is airing this week on County Councilmember Dickie Chang’s “Wala‘au.”
The show times on Oceanic Time Warner Cable channel 6 are Thursday and Saturday at 7 a.m., noon, 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and midnight, and viewers can also check out the show anytime online at www.kauaiworld.com, according to a press release.
Internet viewers need Quicktime, and at the Web site need to scroll down and find the “video” icon on the left side of the home page. Clicking on that box will direct viewers to a list of all the “Wala‘au” shows. The shows don’t have titles, only dates, and the current episode is May 11, 2009.
It is available on the Internet today.
The show includes interviews with members of the Tateishi family of Kalaheo, and a historical recap Hawaiian Fruit Specialties and Kukui brand of jams, jellies, sauces, drinks and more.
Several generations of Tateishi family members tell their story of how they grew up working at the factory, with no vacations and plenty of hard work.
Included are interviews with other local people who would pick fruits and bring them to sell to the Tateishis.
The story does not end there, as also interviewed is Kukui‘ula’s Greg Schredder, current owner, who tells among other things how the surviving members of the Tateishi family express their gratitude for Schredder’s role in keeping the company alive, and local.
“We will continue to produce these products under the same roof as our Koloa Rum Company rum products, here in Kalaheo,” a company spokesperson said in the press release.
“Since 1931 we are still using the original (secret) recipes.”
