This First Annual Celebrity Cook-off features chefs from Kilauea Bakery, Hanalei Gourmet, CJ’s Steakhouse and Grill and Papaya’s Natural Foods. Entertainment will be provided by Kilauea School chorus and ukulele Band, The Yes Men and Kupaoa with Kellen Paik. Judging is between 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tickets are $8 and include a plate lunch.

Poetry reading
KANAKA Public Charter School will present a student-led poetry reading session 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Borders Books and Music. This charter school in Kekaha is bilingual Hawaiian-English and works with the families of Niihau. The 50 students’ ages range from 4 to 17 years-old. They have composed their own “Praise Poems” and will present them in Hawaiian and English. All families and interested parties are welcome to join the school for an evening of beautiful imagery and relaxation.
Kaua‘i Orchestra Free concert

The Kaua‘i Orchestra will perform a free public concert 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center. This is Kaua‘i’s only orchestra and includes many of Kaua‘i’s best classically trained musicians. Reservations are not required and seating is open. The orchestra is conducted by Maestro Larry McIntosh. The program will include: “A Tribute To Henri Mancini,” “Over The Rainbow/I’m Always Chasing Rainbows,” “Step To It, A Fiddle Tune Medley” and more. Winners of the 2009 Larry L. McIntosh Scholarship Association will receive awards and perform accompanied by Dr. Gerald Tomory. Pre-concert music will be provided in the lobby by Ali‘i Strings. A post-concert reception will take place back stage, for which a $5 donation will be appreciated. Voluntary donations will be most appreciated in support of the college’s instrumental music programs. Creative arts summer camp

Located just north of Taco Bell in Kapa‘a, this small art school offers on-going afternoon classes for ages 4 through adult in drawing and painting, ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, stretch and tone and Shotokan karate. The cost is $75 for a 10-week session; $10 per class for drop-ins.
The Green Light Summer Camp is for kids ages 4 to 11 and runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 8 through July 24. The camp includes art, dance and drama activities. July 20 to 24 is performance week, with an evening show on July 24. Sign up for one day, one week or all seven weeks. Affordable hourly, daily and weekly rates available. For a discount enroll by May 15, enroll more than one child per family or enroll in more than one week.

Summer program
Held at the Island School campus in Puhi, the summer program begins June 15 and closes July 10 with an open house. ART Zone classes will be held for artists ages 5 and 6 who have completed Kindergarten. These students will experience a variety of art medium and creative movement with Dean Wakamoto. Register for the 8 a.m. to noon, 12:40 to 4:40 p.m. or all day long.
The academy is offering 6 year-olds, who have completed first grade, to 13 years-olds theatre with Jessica Houk. Other classes include bead work, painting, found object art, music, dance and much more. Kudos to Kaua‘i High School student
Thomas G. Lang has been accepted and will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz. in the fall. Lang is the son of Christopher and Susan Lang. ERAU is the world’s largest fully accredited university specializing in aviation and aerospace.
Mokihana Club
scholarship winners
The Mokihana Club announced winners of its 40th annual music scholarship competition. Seven graduating seniors from Waimea High School, Island School and Kaua‘i High School, all vying for top honors and scholarships, presented their selections for the club last month.
Waimea High School senior Michael Haack received top honors for his trumpet performance of “Aria con Variazione.” Haack will receive $4000 to help with his first-year college expenses. Second place went to Kaua‘i High School senior Donald Albrecht for his trumpet presentation of “Concert Etude” by Alexander Goevicke. Albrecht will receive a $3000 scholarship. Kaua‘i High School senior, Jorey Cantu, received third place for her vocal rendition of “A New Life” from Jekyll and Hyde. Cantu was awarded $2000 toward her studies at Notre Dame De Namur. A vocalist, two pianists and a flautist rounded out the competition at the Lihu‘e Parish Hall. Adel Cardoso of Island School sang “Change In Me.” Kaua‘i High School senior, Meleho‘Ala Ng performed Edvard Grieg’s “Concerto A Minor” on piano. “Mozart’s Sonata in A Major and Prelude” by Gliere was performed by Micah Mizukami. Waimea High School senior, Tara Planas, played “Poulene’s Sonata in A” on her flute. This competition was made possible by the efforts of members of the Mokihana Club and by an endowment from past president of the club, the late Sally Hyman.
