Greg McMackin, head coach for the University of Hawai‘i Warrior football program is coming back to Kaua‘i.
McMackin, his staff, and possible appearances by former Hawai‘i Warriors Davone Bess and Colt Brennan, as well as Ray Lewis, who played for McMackin when he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Miami, will be part of free football clinics July 6-8 at Vidinha Stadium.
The County’s Anti-Drug Office in partnership with Hawai‘i Speed & Quickness will be offering the clinics designed to teach young athletes the latest football techniques and drills.
“Prevention programs like the football clinics are a major component of the Kaua‘i Community Drug Response Plan which focuses on a comprehensive effort to combat substance abuse and build stronger families and a healthier community,” said Kaua‘i Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. “I encourage our young people to take advantage of the opportunity to learn the latest football techniques from Coach Greg McMackin and his terrific staff.”
Theresa Koki, the county’s Anti-Drug coordinator, said the clinics also provide youngsters with a glimpse of university life.
“It’s never too early to plant the seeds for children to start thinking about attending college,” Koki said. “Having a positive experience with representatives from the University of Hawai‘i can help to develop a child’s interest in college.”
Sessions for the football clinics are from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. for youngsters 5-12 years old. Young people aged 13 years and older are invited to the 9:30 to 11 a.m. sessions.
Registration for the clinics will take place at Vidinha Stadium one hour before the start of each clinic.
Participants should wear athletic shoes without spikes and appropriate clothing.
If an American Sign Language interpreter, materials in an alternate format, or auxiliary aid assistance is needed, contact Koki at least five business days prior to the start of the clinics.
