NAWILIWILI — Charter, commercial and recreational fishermen are landing ahi in Kaua‘i waters this summer, traditionally the busy season for the yellowfin tuna.
Case in point is a 135-pounder landed by a visiting Ohio family aboard the 41-foot power cat Mele Kai out of Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor. They also caught two mahimahi weighing 40 and 35 pounds during the Wednesday morning charter.
The ahi was caught around six miles outside Wailua, in around 6,000 feet of water, Capt. Harry Rivera said.
The boat is the office, and charters can be arranged by calling 822-5963 or 651-0166. Rivera said cell phones generally will work until about 12 miles offshore.
The happy anglers, who had gone out with C-Lure four or five times during their stay, and plan on going out again before they leave, are led by David Stemen of Columbus, Ohio.
Stemen is nearing the tail end of a two-month stay on the island, his first visit to Kaua‘i, with he and family members and friends (once numbering close to a dozen but down to just seven now) staying in Po‘ipu.
Stemen said those going on fishing charters should be wary of companies promising they share catches, as one other company he chartered advertising shared catches admitted the fish given to him after his charter was not even from the fish he caught on that charter.
Still, even after a morning charter, Stemen, family and friends hadn’t had enough fishing, and were off to try their luck from shore using fresh bait they caught earlier Wednesday.
