KAPA‘A — The first service for the Kaua‘i Challenge is not until 1:30 p.m., Thursday, but volleyball activity in preparation for the big tournament has already started.
Gary Maguire, coach of the Kapa‘a High School varsity girls volleyball team, worked his girls through the various drills, Monday at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
“We’re going to have Palos Verdes on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, we’ll be scrimmaging Troy,” Maguire said. “Palos Verdes is also scheduled to be here practicing, so we’ll probably do a round robin type mini tournament before the games start, Thursday.”
The Kapa‘a Junior Varsity team was also practicing, Monday, but noted they won’t be part of this year’s Challenge. Instead, the Warrior JV squad will be traveling to O‘ahu the weekend of Aug. 20-22 to take part in the Kamehameha Schools tournament there.
At the Kaua‘i High School gym where the Red Raider girls went through their paces during the Red-and-White game, Friday night, Monday’s practice schedule called for Silverton of Oregon and Huntington of California to be on the courts.
Kaua‘i was also scheduled to scrimmage Silverton on Tuesday afternoon.
Other teams taking practice, Tuesday, included LaReina, Huntington and Troy. Wednesday, the eve of the Kaua‘i Challenge, will have Lovejoy, Waialua, LaReina and Silverton on the courts.
Island School gym will be host to Clovis, Sage and Pomona Catholic, Tuesday, and Sacred Hearts will join the practice lineup, Wednesday.
Waimea High School, whose Menehune girls volleyball squad hosted a Blue-and-White game, Friday, will be host to Newport Harbor on Tuesday and Oak Park, Wednesday.
The 8th Annual Kaua‘i Challenge, featuring 28 teams from Kaua‘i, the Mainland, and around the state, will be playing at all four high school gyms starting Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Games continue Friday starting at 1:30 p.m., with finals taking place Saturday starting at 8 a.m.
Organizers of the Kaua‘i Challenge note that the tournament presents a total of 132 matches over the three-day period.
Fans attending the Kaua‘i High School games are asked to park off-campus if attending the games prior to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. This is due to the ongoing construction taking place at the school that is putting a strain on parking.
Organizers of the Kaua‘i Challenge, spearheaded by former Kaua‘i High School girls volleyball coach Richard Roberts, said the tournament would not be possible without the support and cooperation from the principals, athletic directors and coaches of all the schools. The organizers said the Kaua‘i High School Volleyball Invitational Committee and parents are organizing the event and coordinating the awards dinner that will be held at the Kilohana Plantation, Saturday evening following the tournament.
