LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i, Kapa‘a and Island School will play three games and Waimea will play two games when the 2009 Kaua‘i Challenge starts Thursday from 1:30 p.m.
Games at Kaua‘i High School gym, the Island School gym, and Kapa‘a High School gym will be played on two courts simultaneously. Games at the Waimea High School Gym will be played one at a time.
Kaua‘i, Kapa‘a and Waimea play 1:30 p.m. opening games at their respective gyms, Kaua‘i opening against Newport Harbor, Kapa‘a going up against Hawai‘i Baptist Academy and Waimea meeting Troy High. Island Schjool’s first game starts against Pearl City at 2:45 p.m.
Kaua‘i next meets St. Bonaventure at 5:15 p.m. and Iolani Black starting at 6:30 p.m. in back-to-back matches.
Fans attending the Kaua‘i High School games before 2:30 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday are reminded to find off-campus parking.
Kapa‘a also draws back-to-back matches starting at 5:15 p.m. when the Warriors go up against Lovejoy High, followed by its meeting with Sage Hill starting at 6:30 p.m.
Island School follows its Pearl City match against Huntington Beach starting at 4 p.m., and closes the day against St. Andrews Priory starting at 6:30 p.m.
Waimea’s second game comes at 5:15 p.m. when the Menehune go up against Waialua.
Play continues on Friday starting at 1:30 p.m. at the four sites.
There are 28 teams from Kaua‘i, the United States Mainland, and the state participating in the 8th Annual Kaua‘i Challenge, and organizers said there will be a total of 132 games played between four sites over the three-day period ending Saturday.
A post-tournament awards ceremony will take place at the Kilohana Plantation, Saturday night.
Rich Roberts, former Kaua‘i High School volleyball coach and one of the key organizers of the Kaua‘i Challenge, said Saturday games start at 8 a.m. at all four sites, but the Po‘okela division teams will meet at the Kaua‘i High School gym with the championship game starting at 2 p.m.
Unlike previous years, Roberts said the championship game and the third place game for the Po‘okela division will take place simultaneously.
All of the teams will be playing in one of four divisions, Saturday based on their standings following Thursday and Friday play. The other divisions include the Olinolino, Onipa‘a, and Kamaha‘o.
