LIHU’E — The Kaua‘i Division of the Aloha Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association announced this year’s 2009 Memory Walk Ambassador, Charles “Chip” Rebb. Rebb has lived in Hawai‘i since 1942 and raised both his children here. After the passing of his wife of 63 years, he moved to Kaua‘i to be near his son.
Since the move to Kaua‘i and subsequent residency at Regency Puakea, Rebb has been involved in the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk the past two years as a walker and supporter of the event.
“I have been lucky to have remained as healthy as I am. I support this walk because of what I see everyday here at Regency in how Alzheimer’s affects so many people who live here,” Rebb said in a press release.
Join the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk Saturday at Kukui Grove for a morning of fun with friends walking for health, not to mention raising money and awareness about the disease. Registration begins at 7 a.m., walk begins at 8 a.m.
According to the official Website of the Alzheimer’s Association as many as 5.3 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Today Alzheimer’s is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States.
“Here on Kaua‘i we have about 1500 people who suffer from Alzheimer’s. We’ve estimated that for about $100, one person can be helped with education, money towards research and support for family caregivers. This year we are working to have each walker raise at least $100 and our goal for this year’s walk is $15,000,” said Jill Ramsey, the organization’s outreach coordinator.
