HONOLULU — University of Hawai‘i quarterback Greg Alexander will miss the remainder of the season due to major ligament damage in his left knee suffered in Wednesday’s loss at Louisiana Tech, states a press release from the University of Hawai‘i Athletic Department.
The senior will have surgery today.
Alexander suffered the injury late in the third quarter with the Warriors trailing 24-6. After scrambling out of the pocket, Alexander was hit by Tech’s Adrien Cole just before reaching the UH sidelines. Alexander remained on the field for several minutes and was carted to the locker room.
“I’m deeply disappointed with these results but its part of the game and I wish the team the best throughout the rest of the season,” Alexander said. “I’ll be supporting my teammates from the sidelines and helping out Mo (Bryant Moniz), Brent (Rausch), and Shane (Austin) as best I can. After my surgery, I plan on concentrating on my academics so I can stay on pace to graduate next year.”
“This is a huge loss for our football program and I’m just heartbroken,” head coach Greg McMackin said. “Greg put in a great amount of hard work over the off-season and fall camp and improved his skills enough to be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. He’s a great competitor and we’ll miss him immensely. All of our prayers are with him during his operation and for a full recovery.”
Entering the Louisiana Tech game, Alexander was the nation’s leader in total offense (446.0), and ranked second in passing average (411.3) and fifth in passing efficiency (178.8). He threw for more than 400 yards in consecutive games against Washington State and UNLV. Against LaTech, Alexander finished 20-of-34 passing for 199 yards and two interceptions.
A native of Santa Rosa, Calif., Alexander transferred to UH from Santa Rosa College, where he set a national junior college record with 71 career touchdown passes. Last season, Alexander started the season-opener against Florida and regained the starting role midway through the year, finishing with 1,895 yards passing and 14 touchdowns.
Filling in for Alexander will be either junior college transfer Bryant Moniz or sophomore Shane Austin. Moniz finished the LaTech game and completed 5-of-11 passes for 109 yards. Junior Brent Rausch is still recovering from an earlier injury.
The Warriors will next host Fresno State, Saturday, Oct. 10 at Aloha Stadium.
