Jason Laird
Dr. Kathleen Scarbo, president of the board of directors of Malama Pono, announces that Dr. Jason Laird, Medical Director of Ho’ola Lahui Hawai‘i, has joined the Malama Pono board.
Malama Pono, YWCA of Kaua‘i and the State of Hawai‘i Department of Health STD/AIDS branch have developed a formidable partnership to fill the gaps in services that Kaua‘i experiences for prevention of STDs. While the transmission of the AIDS virus on Kaua‘i has been markedly slowed, other STDs and blood-borne diseases have yet to be significantly impacted and it is the intent of the partnership to do the same for viral hepatitis and the common STDs as has been done with AIDS on Kaua‘i.
Laird, an internal medicine specialist, has been with Ho’ola Lahui Hawai‘i since 2007 and was named Director of Medical Services 2009. Prior to coming to Kaua‘i, Laird was in private practice in Charleston, S.C.

Judy Saronitman
Judy Saronitman is being honored as Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i, Inc.’s Employee of the Quarter. Saronitman is a retired school principal which describes her deep caring for children and youth. Her job with Hale ‘Opio as School Liaison, supports the youth in the residential program in order to be successful at school. Saronitman works mostly on the Kapa‘a High School campus, but also supports the youth at Kapa‘a Middle School. Saronitman is one “tough cookie,” not letting kids get many things by her, but she clearly knows how to motivate and support youth who also struggle with a myriad of emotional and behavioral issues that typically interfere with their academic success, according to a press release from Hale ‘Opio Kaua‘i.
Saronitman shows her caring through her willingness to stand by them and to remind each youth of the many good qualities they possess. The kids know they can count on Judy to be there for them. Under her care, youth learn to resolve problems arising with other students and their teachers. Saronitman models strategies to help youth learn new skills to communicate their needs and frustrations in ways to positively resolve the situation.
Being on campus allows Saronitman to quickly respond to problem situations, supporting both our youth and the teachers and school staff involved. Hale ‘Opio said they believe the School Liaison position is the key to academic success for the youth in their programs. Hale ‘Opio said they feel extremely fortunate to have Saronitman supporting their youth.
