The Elsie H. Wilcox Foundation has given a $6,000 grant to Hale ‘Opio to support the educational needs of children and youth on Kaua‘i, a news release says.
Street Smart is a prevention program providing 12 class sessions over six weeks for young adolescent girls ages 12 to 16 who may be at risk for substance use or other high risk behaviors. This project will be held on select school campuses and helps girls learn to identify how they feel and how to communicate clearly, even when in emotional, stressful situations with family, friends, and especially boyfriends, the release says.
Street Smart is designed to help girls learn effective strategies to keep them from being involved with alcohol or illegal substances, and to learn how to prevent pregnancy, HIV and STDs. Girls who have participated in previous classes report they value most the opportunity to talk about these very important issues and to learn about themselves.
