LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i County Council’s Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday approved a proposed ordinance shifting money around for the upcoming purchase of land for a new affordable housing project.
Bill No. 2338, if approved by the full council on second reading, would revise the project description for a $1 million line item in the Capital Improvement Project budget that was intended for infrastructure to instead allow for it to be used for the purchase of land, Committee Chair Daryl Kaneshiro said after the vote.
Housing Director Eugene Jiminez said Wednesday afternoon that the county is in negotiations for one specific parcel already identified for purchase with the funds, but he declined to identify it or even generalize its location because he did not want to compromise the deal.
Jiminez said the project has been previously planned.
The bill passed unanimously without discussion. It could come before the full council as soon as next week.
