LIHU‘E — To ensure the safety of Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrid drivers, Ford Motor Co. issued a “service bulletin” Thursday to dealerships in reference to a “control unit” programming issue related to braking, said MidPac Auto Center’s John Owens.
Fortunately, none of these vehicles are actually on island or in our inventory, he said.
“There are zero in the area,” he said Friday.
The “customer satisfaction program” is “not a safety issue” related to recalls, he said.
Drivers merely get a feeling the brakes are failing, he explained. It’s not the same as Toyota’s physical braking problems, he explained.
The precautionary measure does not effect the American car maker’s most popular hybrid model and “the originator of the idea” — Ford Escape, Owens added.
When asked how Toyota recalls were affecting business on island, Kaua‘i Toyota Sales Consultant Patrick Iwasaki declined to comment.
Since Toyota recalls are attributed to newer models which have automatic warranties, JB’s Repair in Lihu‘e has not seen any defective models, said one of the owner’s Charla Brock.
“We haven’t come across any people coming in about the recall,” she said.
