The following individuals recently launched a business, were appointed to a leadership position or honored for their work in the business community:
Stephen Bettencourt
Stephen C. Bettencourt — son of Harold and Betty Bettencourt of Fresno, Calif., and grandson of Helen C. and Manuel F. Bettencourt — was recently selected as president of Fresh Pacific Fruit and Vegetable Inc. by its Board of Directors. Fresh Pacific, from its office in Fresno, sources varied fresh agricultural products, dried fruit and nuts globally and ships to customers in Asia and Oceania. Fresh Pacific, along with its sister companies, U.S. Equine Inc., a worldwide thoroughbred horse transporter and Delta International of Tokyo, Japan, an importer and marketer of dried fruits and nuts, continue to service the growing global market.
Alex Nakajima
Alex Nakajima has been appointed the new general manager of the Makai Golf Course in Princeville. Nakajima originally joined Troon Golf in 2000 to open the company’s Japan office in Tokyo. He also gained valuable experience working with an investment institution as director of golf asset management overseeing 150 golf courses and developing Accordia Golf, the largest golf course management company in Japan.
Angela Serota
The Hawai‘i State Department of Health’s Kaua‘i Medical Reserve Corps announced last week it has awarded Angela Serota with the President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor offered in recognition of her over 100 hours of volunteer service during 2009.
Established in 2003, the award is available on an annual basis to individuals, groups and families who have met or exceeded requirements for volunteer service and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship through volunteering.
Serota, a member of the Kaua‘i MRC since August 2008, is a retired nurse who dedicates her time and efforts toward helping her community stay healthy and prepared. She has been an instrumental volunteer in the DOH’s “Stop Flu at School” vaccination campaigns.
The Kaua‘i MRC has a history of volunteer service with more than 80 volunteers performing community service each year on behalf of the organization.

Mary Taudel-Ashby
New York City native Mary A. Taudel-Ashby, D.D.S. is an associate with the Kalaheo Dental Group, owned by Terry R. Allen, D.D.S., principal, located in Rainbow Plaza, Suite 204.
Taudel-Ashby has been with KDG for over two years, and prior to that with Hawai‘i Family Dental Centers in Lihu‘e for two-and-a-half years. She treats clients ranging in age from children to older adults — and looks forward to receiving new clients.
A 2005 graduate of the New York University College of Dentistry which includes 13 years of college education, Taudel-Ashby completed her Bachelor of Business Administration followed by a dental hygiene licensing program. She then worked as a dental hygienist while taking pre-med classes to enter dental school, where Taudel-Ashby studied under one of the leaders in implant research. She is licensed to practice dentistry in the states of New York and Hawai’i.
