Wendy Tannery topped three events and daughter Cheyanne topped four events at the first of six American West Kaua‘i Rodeo Association events, Saturday.
“Cheyanne was down with the flu so we couldn’t ride in the Kaua‘i All Girls rodeo, but she and I both won in the American West, so I’m happy,” Wendy, a teacher at Kaua‘i High School, said before school.
Wendy topped the Open Barrels 1D on an 18.55 go aboard Rev, just .02 second ahead of Tami Yamamoto riding Slider.
Cheyane followed in the Open Barrels 2D on a 19.18 go aboard Rev to edge out Shan Mundon (19.51) riding Lucky. Rev continued to bring success to Cheyanne in the Youth Barrels 1D on a 19.05 go and both the Youth Gymkhana 1 Scurby Race (13.247) and the Youth Gymkhana 2 Keyhole (18.940).
Rev earned its oats at the American West because following the winning performanced by Cheyanne, took Wendy to the top of the Open Gymkhana 1 Scurby Race on a 12.721 go and the top of the Open Gymkhana 2 Keyhole on a 9.345 go, topping Tierra Rapozo (11.350) by more than two seconds.
Rapozo, riding Kau, topped the Open Barrels 3D on a 19.86 go over second finisher Nancy McMahon (19.91 aboard Boyfriend) and 22.55 aboard Johnny.
McMahon went on to top the Senior Barrels 1D on a 20.02 while riding Toby.
Jimmy Miranda, riding Mongoose, topped the Open Barrels 4D on a 20.76 go and captured the Senior Barrels 2D on a 20.88 go. Miranda switched to Blue Boy for a second finish in the Senior Barrels 4D and settled in third place in Open Gymkhana 1 Scurby Race aboard Mongoose. Blue Boy earned Miranda a second finish in Open Gymkhana 2 Keyhole with a 23.89 go.
Teddy Antipala rode Duncan to a top finish in the Senior Barrels 3D with a 22.38 go. Antipala finished seventh in the Open Gymkhana 1 Scurby Race on a 17.348 and fifth in the Open Gymkhana 2 Keyhole on a 15.345 go.
Lelan Nishek topped the Senior Barrels 4D, riding TJ to a 23.62 go. He went on to finish eighth in the Open Gymkhana 1 Scurby Race on a 27.339 before drawing a ‘No Time’ in Open Gymkhana 2 Keyhole.
Kaena Grace topped the Peewee Barrels on a 35.48 go over Kylee Rapozo (41.24) and Mahina Puu (91.56).
The next American West event is Mar. 6 at the CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu.
