LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders needed extra time and a shootout just to get into the HHSAA Division II girls soccer championships.
No such situation was necessary Wednesday, as Kaua‘i steamrolled Kaimuki, garnering a 9-0 win in the tournament’s first round at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
Alyssa “Malu” Vegas led the way with three goals in the game, getting the action started with the first score in the 18th minute.
That opened the floodgates as Maegan Wong followed with a score just two minutes later and Jessica Crane made it a 3-0 game in the 24th minute.
The second half only got worse for Kaimuki, as Isabelle Curtis scored in the 42nd minute, followed by Vegas’ second score in the 46th and Malia Kagawa getting in on the action in the 49th minute.
Vegas completed her hat trick in the 54th minute, with Lisa Tangalin (59th) and Audrey Lang (61st) finding the net for the final Raider goals.
The dominant win moves the Raiders into the quarterfinals, where the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors also reside, having gotten a bye as the tournament’s No. 2 seed.
Kaua‘i’s next opponent will be Hawai‘i Prep, the tournament’s No. 4 seed. That game, will begin today at 3 p.m., as will all four quarterfinal contests.
Kapa‘a will take on Honoka‘a, which got through with a 7-1 win over Radford, Wednesday. Monica Carlos and Kimberly Kishimoto each scored two goals for Honoka‘a.
The Lady Warriors put together a perfect 8-0 regular season in the KIF and are one of the favorites to come away with the state crown.
In other first round action Wednesday, Makua Lani notched a 2-1 victory over Seabury Hall with Tiffany Nakamura scoring her second goal, the game-winner in the 75th minute. It will now take on top-seeded Kailua in the quarters.
KS-Hawai‘i took a 1-0 win over Nanakuli with Olivia Azevedo scoring the game’s only goal in the 33rd minute. It now gets No. 3 seed Pac-Five, last year’s HHSAA Div. II champion.
