PO‘IPU — A 62-year-old visitor from Colorado Springs, Colo., was in critical condition Saturday at Wilcox Memorial Hospital after being found face down Friday afternoon in the water fronting Lawa‘i Beach Resort, county spokesperson Mary Daubert said.
The man had been snorkeling about 20 feet offshore with family members when his brother noticed that he was motionless. His brother brought him to shore and bystanders performed CPR until Koloa firefighters arrived and he was taken to the hospital.
In a separate incident, a Las Vegas man was rescued Saturday afternoon after being pulled out to sea at Kauapea Beach on the North Shore.
A fellow beach-goer reportedly swam out to him and helped him to stay calm and just float and wait while lifeguards were called, Daubert said, noting that not panicking is crucial in such situations. Lifeguards came from Kealia Beach on a Jet Ski and brought him safely to shore.
The county recommends people swim at guarded beaches, check with lifeguards before going out, and visiting www.kauaiexplorer.com for more information.
