LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i public-school students in grades three through eight and 10 are taking the annual Hawai‘i State Assessment tests from March 29 through April 23, a state Department of Education release states.
The HSA measures student achievement in reading, mathematics and science, and is being administered to students in all those grades in reading and mathematics, and in science for grades four, six and 10.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind law, the test determines if schools will attain Annual Yearly Progress targets for the 2009-2010 school year in reading, 58 percent proficiency rate, and mathematics, 46 percent proficiency rate.
Parents and guardians can assist by supporting children to do well on the test, and the DOE in the release suggests the following:
— Assure children get adequate rest the night before the tests;
— Provide nutritious breakfasts;
— Bring children to school on time to promote a good start;
— Encourage children to be serious about the test and do their best.
For further information and/or questions, please contact your child’s school.
Bill Arakaki, DOE Kaua‘i complex area superintendent, said the annual HSA testing is important for the children of Kaua‘i, and thanked parents and guardians for their cooperation and support of the process.
