Kapa‘a’s Sean Mamaclay had the best round of the 2010 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf season Saturday.
So did Kaua‘i’s Pono Tokioka.
But the Kapa‘a boys carded the best team score of the season at 314 compared to Kaua‘i boys, who finished with their poorest showing of the season at 321.
Kaua‘i’s Taylor Viquelia outshot teammate Kelli Oride by one stroke, the second time she’s done that this season to lead the Red Raider ladies to a 236 showing over Waimea’s 344.
“With the win, the Kaua‘i girls have the KIF title,” said Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i High School athletic director. “But if Kapa‘a can win two of the remaining three KIF matches, there will be a tie.”
Viquelia finished Saturday’s round at Wailua Golf Course with a 74 to Oride’s 75 and Daezsa Tomas’ 87.
That puts the Raiders with a team average of 239.75 with eight team points.
Melissa Kagawa topped the Menehune wahine with a 101 to finish with a 150 average over two games. Mariah Paiste finished a stroke back at 102 and Quincee Parongao rounded out the Menehune scoring at 141 for a 344 showing.
Following four rounds, Waimea averages 354.25 with four points.
Mamaclay topped the Kapa‘a boys’ scoring with the day’s best score, a one-over par 73, his season’s best and a 10-stroke improvement over his score last week.
“Sean had good scores coming into the KIF, but has been struggling since the first round,” Shimabukuro said. “Looks like he finally broke out of his slump. He’s back.”
Shimabukuro said the next round should be an interesting one because Tokioka will be on the Mainland for a tournament.
Ken Miyata also carded his season’s best score, a 77 — one stroke better than Weston Moniz, who carded a 78 to tie his season-best score. Jordan Guerrero finished with an 86, his best for this season as well.
With the win, Kapa‘a averages 331.75 and nine points, which puts the Warriors in second place after four matches.
Kaua‘i, finishing with 321, still holds the lead with a 317.50 average over four games and 11 points.
Tokioka paced the Raiders with a 75, tying his season-best score, followed by Levi Miyashiro carding a 79, dropping a stroke from last week’s score.
Kai Adachi carded an 81, his best this season, and Braeden Robley finished with an 86 to top off Kaua‘i’s score.
Waimea rounded out the team scoring with 347, led by Dylan Santos-Balisacan carding his season-best 76. Shawn Tavares followed an 83 and Marius Foudila added a 93, season bests for both Menehune golfers. Joshua Matsusaka rounded out the scoring with a 95.
Overall, Waimea touts a 345.75 average over four rounds and four points.
Dan Miller of Island School finished medalist play with a 114 and Kyle Groves of ‘Olelo Christian Academy posted his season-best 87, and improvement of 10 strokes over his last outing.
Groves, who exchanged his Junior Dragster for golf clubs while awaiting his new car, has been averaging a 10-stroke improvement over the three rounds he’s played in the KIF. He currently sports a 97.33 average over three rounds.
Saturday’s round is at the Kaua‘i Lagoons, with the first grouping teeing off starting at noon.
